Benchmarking for the Merino Sheep Industry!

The Australian Merino Production Trial is the largest commercial evaluation of Merino sheep not only in Australia, but globally. Entrants are sourced from right across the country, providing a broad geographic spread that reflects the true diversity of bloodlines and their performance under different conditions.

This wide representation gives the industry a valuable opportunity to better understand how various genetics perform across environments. It’s fair to say the trial carries significant weight, bringing together some of the largest and most influential Merino breeders in the industry. The current trial represents approximately 350,000 ewes across participating properties, highlighting the scale and relevance of the data being generated.

Moses & Son have been proud supporters of Craig Wilson’s trials for over 20 years. Throughout that time, we’ve seen the considerable value these trials deliver—not only for our clients, but for the broader Merino industry. They provide a practical benchmark for producers to assess where their own enterprises sit within the wider Australian wool industry, particularly in relation to the key drivers of profit and performance.

A big thank you goes to our team who contributed their time and expertise during the shearing phase of the trial. Kelli, Jackie, and Abby provided wool classing excellence, Marty assisted with the data management, Hamish handled the pressing, and Tom worked in the yards, supported by his dogs Max, Sam, Ace & Cali.
