2025-S01

Week S01: 2/07/2025: The AWEX EMI closed at 1208c, up 1c at auction sales in Australia this week. With a 0.8c rise in the currency exchange rate, the EMI rose by 10c in US terms to close at 795c—its equal highest point since March 2025. A total of 27,716 bales went under the hammer this week, with 93.6% clearing to the trade. Competition in the Merino sector was again dominated by the largest Chinese Topmakers, alongside the largest Australian trading exporter. However, all other wool categories were the domain of the trading exporters. Whilst there was nominal change to the EMI, there were substantial price increases across the Crossbred MPGs, with increased competition coming from Indian and European interests rather than China.

Merino Fleece

saw a reasonable performance on Tuesday, followed by an uninspiring selling day on Wednesday. Goodstyle fleece remained relatively unchanged in the 16–17.5 MPG range, with noticeable price degradation in the 18–19.5 MPGs. Reports of ongoing difficulty in establishing new forward business with Chinese mills saw China’s largest Topmaker head the Merino Fleece buying list.

Merino Skirtings

opened generally firm across most micron and VM categories and were well supported. There was better competition on the 18-micron, well-specified and prepared skirtings, which were 10 cents dearer for wool with vegetable matter under 5%. Wednesday experienced more of the same support. Poorly prepared and cotted coloured lots remain heavily discounted.

Merino Cardings

in Sydney and Melbourne posted another small rise this week; however, the Western centre saw the MC rise by 19c. With offerings on Tuesday only, Fremantle cardings were generally 15–20c dearer, with washing locks up to 30c dearer.

Crossbred Fleece

Crossbred Oddments

Crossbreds

carried this week’s EMI, with rises of 16c–25c added to the 25–30 MPGs.

Market Commentary

As we quickly draw the curtain on the 2024–25 season and begin the new season, we can assess overall performance. This week, AWTA Ltd released tested quantities for the 2024/25 season totalling 295.4 mkg. When compared with 334.7 mkg last season, this represents an 11.7% drop.

Next Week

national offering of 29,015 bales is expected to attract more of the same as the previous three weeks. ~ Marty Moses.

My intel indicates the continuation of the current trend:

• Merino Fleece remains the major concern, with demand continuing to be subdued and most likely slightly cheaper.

• Prices should remain steady for the Merino Skirting and Carding markets

• XB combing wool market should remain fully firm.
