2024-S49
Week S49: 04/06/2025: The AWEX EMI closed on 1199c down 5c at auction sales in Australia this week. The main currency exchange pairing saw the AUD strengthen against the USD which tested .65 USc which resulted in a 1c fall in the EMI in US terms. This week’s national offering was the smallest since September 2020 with just 22,806 bales as Fremantle did not offer in this week series. Despite the small selection the clearance was 90.1% was achieved. As we are seeing in most weeks, each selling day can conflict the previous one and reflects the difficult trading conditions, especially in the Merino Fleece market. Low volumes were not the only challenge as the seasons transition into the winter months. The variation in the specifications and quality of the selection has widened creating more difficulty for the exporters to batch any meaningful quantity of the main Merino combing wool types, hence some Trading exporters are proceeding tentatively until the quality and quantity improve. Despite this difficulty Australia’s largest trading company topped the buyers list in the Merino Fleece, Skirtings and Crossbred sections, and were in the top 4 buyers in the oddment sector. The traders and Indent buyers seemed to trade aggressively on some wool types however at these levels grower’s sellers are selling reluctantly but generally meeting the market.
Merino Fleece
Tuesday’s market opened with slightly better results in all sectors with 17.5,19 & 20 MPG’s holding firm the 17.0, 18.0 & 18.5 MPG rising between 1 and 5c and the 19.5 MPG falling by 8c. Despite sellers welcoming the general positive shift the pass in rate crept up to 10.2%.
Merino Skirtings
Remained firm in both centres on both days. Best style and specified lots attracted small premiums however skirtings remain easier to trade than their fleece counterparts.
Merino Cardings
Remained marginally subdued with a 1c fall (700c) in the MCI in Sydney and a 3c fall (645c) in the MCI in Melbourne.
Crossbred Fleece
Crossbred Oddments
Crossbreds
The Northern 26 and 28 MPG saw a 14c and 20c lift respectively over the week with Tuesdays offering contributing the majority of the weekly rises. Whilst the volume in this sector remains low Exporters are aggressively chasing the best length lots with a low Coefficient of Micron.
Next Week
National offering of 30,187 bales includes Fremantle offering on both selling days. Notably both Sydney and Melbourne are offering less bales next than this week so the pressure on the available quantities to meet orders will continue to be a challenge. At this point the market seems set to track sideways in USD terms so were all praying for a weaker dollar. ~ Marty Moses.
