Week

2025-S25

:
17/12/2025

The AWEX EMI closed on 1541c down 1c at auction sales in Australia this week. When you combine the week’s sale was advertised as a 40,000 bale offering and the misalignment of the sale calendar and the pre-Christmas shipping deadlines, the 1c drop in the EMI was a healthy result. Clearances rates were a solid 92.9% this week maintaining its performances and a better Christmas present better than socks and undies.

Reflecting to the Year-on-year comparisons the EMI is up 33.5% from this time last year and in USD it is up 40%. Offerings are down 3.7% but there has been some offset from wool on hold being drawn into the market in response to the rising prices. AWTA report bales tested to date are down 12.1%. To support AWTA figures the wool that has been offered is slightly less in style, lower in VM, and lower in staple Strength.

Merino Fleece

Merino Fleece saw buyers keen to secure the majority of their fleece orders on the first day of selling which saw the EMI closed up 2c for the day and Sydney MPG’s posting general rises between 3c to 18c. The exception was the 16.5-17.5 MPG’s which generally held their ground. Whilst Melbourne’s MPG movements straddled last weeks levels the Southern MPG managed to post a 1c rise. Wednesday’s Northern region selection contained less suitable wool than the previous day and whilst the better style and specified lots maintained solid competition, prices for the rest decreased as the day progressed. The largest buyers of this sector were the Large Australian Trading Exporters, Chinese Indent operators and Chinese Top Makers

Merino Skirtings

Merino Skirtings demonstrated that demand for these types is enduring, holding fully firm across all centres on both days. Some bright pockets of demand appeared for the best prepared Superfine “Broken” lines being offered in the North and a small rise in 19-micron, low VM pieces offered in the South. Similar to the Merino Fleece the largest buyers of the merino skirting sector were the Large Australian Trading Exporters, Chinese Top Makers and Chinese Indent operators.

Merino Cardings

Despite reports of improving inquiry in this sector the MC indices held its ground once again.

Crossbred Fleece

Crossbred Oddments

Crossbreds

Crossbreds opened the week with good support on Tuesday’s selection posting small changes across the MPG’s. Melbourne reported some weakening of the 30 and 32 MPG’s. Unfortunately, the poorer selection offered on Wednesday did not generate enough vigour to hold the previous price levels.

Market Commentary

The Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee’s (AWPFC) 3rd forecast of wool production for the 2025/26 season is 244.7 Mkg greasy. This is 12.6% lower than the 2024/25estimate and a 6.9 Mkg greasy downward revision of the August 2025 forecast.

Committee Chairman, Stephen Hill said that "Seasonal conditions continue to bite in some key wool producing regions, particularly in southern New South Wales and Victoria. Wool prices are currently 40% higher than last season and sheep meat prices remain high which has improved producer sentiment regarding wool production. However, sheep numbers remain at historically low levels and are likely to take18 to 24 months to increase due to low numbers of breeding ewes and continued strong demand for mutton and lamb. The high cost of replacement breeding ewes and concerns regarding stock water availability over summer, particularly in Victoria, are expected to temper any short-term recovery in sheep numbers.
