2026-S09
The AWEX EMI closed on 1853c, up 41c at auction sales in Australia this week. After the previous weeks heavy loss in the EMI, this week saw a complete reversal in the buyer sentiment, with the large Chinese Top Makers dominating the Merino Fleece purchases. Whilst the AUD relationship to the USD worked against the wool purchases, the EMI was able to increase 47 USc, 19c above the pre recess US levels and the best USD EMI for the past 6 selling weeks.
The offering dropped back to 23,651 bales nationally, the smallest 3 selling centre offering in 11 months. The market went up more this week than the trade expected leaving the three giant Chinese Top makers fighting to secure stock this week.
Merino Fleece
Merino Fleece opened well above where it left off last Wednesday. The market rebound saw the Merino MPG’s measure rises between 30 and 83c in the Northern region and 38-64c in the Southern region. Whilst there was more urgency to secure the better specified and stylish low VM lots all fleece celebrated solid rises. Wednesday saw slightly smaller price increases with the only weakness measured on the 18.5 Northern MPG. This was due to Tuesdays 83c rise in the Northern 18.5µ MPG which surpassed the Southern 18 MPG by 32c. Wednesday saw the Northern 18.5 MPG fall 15c and the Southern 18.5 MPG rise 16c to close within 1c of each other.
Merino Skirtings
Merino Skirtings mirrored the fleece’s upward trajectory on both days rising 40-60c on Tuesday and continuing to rise another 10-20c on Wednesday.
Merino Cardings
Merino Cardings gained 20-40c on Tuesday and was slightly dearer on Wednesday with crutching and stains largely unchanged.
Crossbred Fleece
Crossbred Oddments
Crossbreds
Crossbreds experienced solid support adding 20- 30c with slightly smaller rises on Wednesday.
Next Week
Next week’s offering remains low with a low 26,000 bales being offered. Inquiry has been moderately growing for the medium and smaller processors for the next few weeks which should add more spark to the kindling. My conversations with Exporters revealed there was a noticeable absence of competition from the small and medium Chinese top makers. We expect the market will continue this solid upward trajectory next week. ~Marty Moses

Market Commentary
I learned from some really encouraging snippets of current news that supports the most asked questions right now. How long can this wool market sustain these levels?? Well three indicators of the increase in demand for merino wool that have emerged:
There has been a 119% increase in sales in the Outdoor & Sprots wear sector.
The Chinese mills are upscaling their Merino -Cotton blends for everyday casual wear which is using the latest advancements in Spinning technology enabling accessible price points and driven rapid market penetration, measuring growth in excess of 200%.
The introduction of Year-round Wearability for 17.5-19.5 Merino fabrics, featured in Spring/Summer collections, which traditionally only featured in the Autumn/Winter Collections. In the early growth of 15-30% have been encouraging.
The forward contracts recommenced trading this week after an extended period of no or very cautious trading. I will be watching if with interest this sector.
