2026-S15
The AWEX EMI closed on 1820c up 1c at auction sales in Australia this week. With the AUD/USD exchange rate stable this week, the EMI in USD also rose 1USc to close the week on 1268USc. The split sale days were always going to add some market reporting confusion with Melbourne and Fremantle opening the sales series on Tuesday and Melbourne and Sydney both offering on Wednesday and Sydney selling in isolation on Thursday. The slightly smaller offering of 26,235 bales and a generally stronger finish to the week, resulted in a 93.1% clearance rate. The competition from Exporters seems more targeted at well-specified lots on offer. The previous dominance from Chinese seems to have moderated, and evidenced by the cautious approach in their purchasing, as they eagerly await news further down the pipeline to emerge. Meanwhile Europe and India have seemingly re-entered the market in anticipation that the pause in Chinas urgency to buy may be short lived. This may explain the gaps in the competition on certain wool specifications and the dishevelled market signals experienced this week.
Merino Fleece
Merino Skirtings
Merino Skirtings opened the week generally unchanged with the best specified and prepared skirtings continuing to attract better price support. Exporters report relatively good demand in this market sector mainly destined for the fine wool knitwear sector. The top 4 buyers purchased 63.9% with similar spread of competition to the M FLC.
Merino Cardings
Merino Cardings remained pretty consistent week on week in the eastern selling centers with limited supplies the key to the solid market. Bulky Crutching, Stains and Lambs drove prices higher this week. The top 4 buyers consuming 51.7%.
Crossbred Fleece
Crossbred Oddments
Crossbreds
Crossbreds are experiencing increased volumes through auctions sales somewhat earlier this year. This slight increase in volume has apparently placed some price pressure on the Crossbreds MPG's.58.1% purchased to the top 4 buyers.
Next Week
Next week's sale, the national offering, rises to 35,096 bales. Despite the persisting uncertainty on price emanating from the Chinese early-stage processors, next week is expected to trade reasonably close to this week's market close. ~ Marty Moses
